Do you enjoy eating good and healthy?

Then you’ll want to check out NuVal.

What is NuVal?

It stands for “Nutritional Value” It has been developed by Dr. David Katz, of Yale University Prevention Research Center. The NuVal system is a new way to quickly find the nutritional value of the food you are purchasing. The Nutritional Scoring System is from 1 to 100. The higher the NuVal Score the higher the nutritional value. For example, blackberries have a NuVal of 91.

How the Scoring Works

NuVal Scores summarize comprehensive nutritional information in one simple number between 1 and 100. Each NuVal Score takes into account more than just the nutrition fact panel. It considers 30-plus nutrients and nutrition factors – the good (protein, calcium, vitamins) and the not-so-good (sugar, sodium, cholesterol). And then it boils it down into a simple, easy-to-use number; a number you can trust to make better decisions about nutrition in just a few seconds.

7 Tips for Eating Healthy the NuVal Way

1. Read labels – the NuVal label.

2. Look at this website: http://www.NuVal.com and teach your children about healthy eating.

3. Prepare your meal plans and grocery list with NuVal (nutritional value). Have the children look at the labels with you at the grocery store and help decide which brand to choose.

4. Introduce new fruits, vegetables and new recipes with more nutritional value.

5. Go for a walk – around the neighborhood, at a local park or ride bikes (with helmets, of course) , swimming, play croquet, badminton, volleyball whatever is a great family activity.

6. Drink plenty of water and help each other to stay healthy and make wise choices.

7. Count your blessings for finding a healthier lifestyle to pass on to your children and grandchildren.

There’s a lot more to the science behind the NuVal System than what we’ve explained here. To learn more about it – and the independent panel of nutrition and medical experts who developed it – visit The Science Behind NuVal.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to information about toxins and carcinogens in our everyday usage and how they destroy overall environmental quality. Unfortunately, the FDA does not look out for us when it comes to personal care and household cleaning products – we’re on our own! The best defense is to choose products from a company which doesn’t pollute.

My family has chosen to to use a company that doesn’t pollute the environment (or us) with their products. Our choice is Neways International. They have been given the Seal of Safety from the Cancer Prevention Coalition which found all of its products to be free of toxins and carcinogens. …one of the many reasons why I chose to affiliate with Neways.

Check out the article excerpt and see my action steps to protect yourself and your family.

- Peggy

Pollution in People

By: Shelley Page and Susan Allan, Ottawa Citizen

November 13, 2005

During the past 50 years, breast cancer incidence has climbed 90 per cent.

Lung cancer rates have jumped more than 600 per cent.

Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer tied to a weakened immune system, has increased 250 per cent.

Asthma affects more kids than ever before.

Biomonitoring tests reveal toxic chemicals are in all of us, on that everyone seems to agree.

So what does it mean to human health? Scientists are only beginning to explore the links.

—

Infants start life polluted with PCBs, pesticides and 200 industrial chemicals. Rocket fuel laces their mother’s breast milk. Carcinogens, hormone disruptors and the chemicals used to make GOR-TEX and Teflon infuse everyone’s blood.

New technology is making it possible to find ever smaller concentrations of chemicals in people’s blood.

Last year, the Environmental Working Group in Washington, D.C., released Body Burden: The Pollution in People, a study that examined the levels of 210 chemicals in nine people. In April, the World Wildlife Federation tested 39 members of the European Parliament for 101 compounds.

Until recently, Canadians stayed out of the bloodletting. Then last week the Toronto-based group Environmental Defence announced it had tested 11 Canadians for 88 chemicals believed to be either carcinogenic or to disrupt reproduction, hormonal function and/or interfere with fetal development. The study found, on average, participants had 44 chemicals in their bodies.

Renowned artist and environmentalist Robert Bateman was one of the test subjects. Despite eating organic food, using environmentally friendly cleaners and living on an idyllic West Coast island, his body was revealed to be a repository for 48 toxins: heavy metals; PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls used in electrical transformers and now banned); PBDEs (polybrominate d diphenyl ethers used as fire retardants); PFOs (perfluorinated chemicals used in stain repellents, non-stick cookware and food packaging), pesticides and insecticides.

“I had no idea when they were taking those samples out of my arm that there was a possibility that all those chemicals could be in there,” a bewildered Bateman told a journalist.

The Canadian report raised more questions than it answered.

Does the fact our bodies are laden with chemicals mean anything? Are the increasing number of cancers, fertility problems, auto-immune diseases, autism and other horrors related to these chemicals in our bodies? Can we trace learning difficulties, mental illness and brain fog to the chemicals our bodies absorbed as far back as the womb? Were the harsh pollutants found in Mr. Bateman and others in concentrations considered dangerous? If the majority of the studies’ participants were healthy, at it appears, does this mean the toxic findings are meaningless?

For half a century, advancing societies have pumped the global environment full of synthetic chemicals, while realizing previously unimagined benefits.

But during these five decades, our bodies, particularly our fat cells, have become storage tanks for the byproducts of vastly improved lifestyles.

Environmental activists call this “chemical body burden” — the price of technological advance.

————

As early as this Thursday, the European Union is expected to vote on legislation that would overhaul chemical regulations in the EU and force businesses to prove their products are safe. The Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) legislation would phase out chemicals found to be carcinogenic.

Last Tuesday in Brussels, a group representing two million physicians urged members of the European Parliament to pass the legislation.

“We are in a serious situation,” Dr. Dominique Belpomme told the legislators. “Some 75 per cent of cancers are due to mutations induced by environmental factors, mainly chemicals.”

You can read the full article here.

Note: My family has chosen Neways International because its products have total approval of being the “Safety Conscious Company” by the Cancer Prevention Coalition and Dr. Samuel Epstein, director and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

I would like to announce the birth of 2 new grandsons
in the month of March:

3/3 Abram Michael and 3/17 Isaac Andrew

Both families are doing well and enjoying
their gift/blessing of healthy boys.

Both Moms are nursing, which is an excellent bonding, healthy, nutritional, immunity-building start to life. The colostrum is so beneficial in creating resistance to illness and growth. I found this website to be very informative about the benefits for mother and child:

http://www.motheringfromtheheart.com/Benefits.htm

They’ve gotten their babies started with a healthy immunity and loving relationship.

Now there’s caring for the baby, changing diapers, cleansing, laundering their adorable little onesies, outfits, dresses, booties, etc.

Initially, bathing a baby can be a little stressful, as they cry from being unclothed, cold and surprised by the sponge bathing and water trickling on their bodies. But bathing can also develop into a satisfying, playful, relaxing, cleansing touch for both baby and mom/dad.

Most new parents don’t realize they should be concerned with what ingredients are in the mainstream baby products. This is a very important factor in caring for their new babies. Otherwise, they can build up a number of toxins that can hamper the healthy start you have created with nursing your baby.

Neways Generations Baby Pack

Mainstream baby products contain potentially
harmful ingredients especially sodium lauryl sulfate.

I would like to introduce to you an alternative to the mainstream baby products that are safe for babies, toddlers and children: Neways Generations (a complete system of hand & body wash, lotion, powder, detangler, bubble bath, baby pack).

How about taking a look at this blog post by my son, Andrew, the new dad, wanting to share and create a communication for others to be, new, experienced dads and perhaps grandpas, too? He speaks from one generation to another helping to build up baby boys or girls with insight from the “male nurturing” perspective.

“Hey, mom, what is that link to get toxin-free, safe baby products again?”

Neways Generations

What you put in your hand, into your mouth to eat consists of your diet - even the smallest of “food” makes a difference and affects your body in various ways.

But do you consciously think about what you are putting into your mouth?

Are you making a conscious effort to follow a plan – dieting and, hopefully, exercising in some way so that when you weigh in, you will like the number you see?

If you are eating quick, fast food, snacking on junk foods (you know – soda pop, chips, candy, donuts, sugary, fried goodies), lots of processed, canned, high sodium, high-fat foods, you could be considered to be die-eating and on your way to disease.

So, what we eat does matter and we all need to think about eating and exercise.

I’m a para-educator at a high school and we are doing the “Biggest Loser” as an incentive to lose weight, get in shape, encourage one another with healthy tips, recipes, website sharing, calorie reduction and social interaction among staff.

Here’s where you can find some great ideas to explore:

http://livestrong.com

Also, the first lady, Michelle Obama, initiated on February 16, 2010 the http://www.letsmove.gov to help young people, families to eat and live healthier lifestyles, states are developing programs thru schools and communities to lower the obesity and yes, closer look so we improve our “dieting.”

——————————

Here’s a great article about a fruit that we all can enjoy, inexpensive, easy to eat and get wonderful health benefits from.

http://healthyeating.bloggood.net/benefits-of-eating-bananas

—————————-

Ok, so I took my son, Andrew’s advice and wrote this blog about health and nutrition and about an experience in my life and feeling it from the heart. I was especially motivated when I weighed in today and, even though I exercised and ate healthy most of the time this week, I still gained a pound (but of course, that was muscle, right!?).

So I’ll just keep walking, biking, doing floor exercises, dancing to music, cleaning for clients, climbing stairs (you get the idea – actively moving of some kind).

The key here is that I was thinking about it and taking action.

It’s a start, and I’m learning and just doing it to hopefully educate and encourage one another.

Have a funtastic weekend of healthy eating and active living!!!!

Peggy

P.S. Got any tips for our “Biggest Loser” group at school?

Our topic: “What to Blog About”

Perhaps you are just starting out or have been working on a blog or website for “a while” now.

You can probably relate to my concerns and feel the same as I do.

Thinking it has to be “perfect”, informational, intelligent, have value for someone to want to read it, comment or make fun of you?!

I think you might appreciate the encouragement and insight from my son, who has his own blog.

—————————————————————————

9:37pm Peggy

…need to get writing more for blog. I see alot of articles I like for posting and small comments but not sure if I should use others info a lot.

9:38pm Andrew

my big thing for you is to not talk about this stuff and just start doing it

just start grabbing great articles and posting them on the blog

copy and paste with some quick commentary about it at the beginning

no more education….

you know how to do it

nike: just do it!

9:41pm Peggy

I know, I need to get a capture form for email marketing and sending back that Scribd article we did before as FREE “product” of information. I will work on this weekend.

9:43pm Peggy

I received 6 good comments and need to followup with sending that. Not sure how unless set in to my email marketing on a list with some other additional autoresponder of more information

9:43pm Andrew

don’t worry about the “capture form”!!!

just start producing good content on the blog

that is what will drive traffic..

nothing else

don’t worry about sending follow-up stuff…just have conversations with people on your blog

and be sure to respond right away.

9:44pm Peggy

well I would like to know who or how many look or come to my site

9:44pm Andrew

you know how many from GA

and you will get to know people by talking with them when they come

9:44pm Peggy

Google Analytics

the key is talking to people

just like at church

you tell people about yourself

and talk with them about their needs

but your blog is the church!

you are the pastor

and you gotta preach!

to spark growth in your “followers”

and to get more people to come…

just sent the email with some of my media stuff

9:46pm Peggy

ok baby steps to grow a family of followers and friends!

9:47pm Andrew

yep…

and you can write the simplest stuff

little reflections of 100 words or less

and people will respond

just talk about your key words

make it like a diary

share your thoughts and feelings about stuff happening in your life related to nutrition and health

ok, I’d better get reading and writing, put it into God’s hands and let him lead and control to bring people in to learn about my passion for health and wellness for all

————————————————————————————————–

My husband, Paul and I have been involved with the Health and Wellness Committee in our local church for about 3 years. We really enjoy being a part of this committee. Since we are new to the area and the parish, it has helped us to get acquainted with parishioners, not only on the committee, but through various activities the committee has sponsored for the benefit of all. Also, to offer valuable information to all ages from infant to eighty, singles, families, elderly, widowed, to promote healthy living.

Our committee supports 2 parish nurses. We are also comprised of other nurses who work in a clinic, hospital, county health department or a nursing home practicing in various fields relating to the heart, intensive care, mental health or administrative. We have a pharmacist, physical therapist, dental office manager and a member that is sight impaired. Paul and I represent and are concerned about preventive, alternative health choices and chemical awareness information. We are a great blend of people willing to help educate and assist all parishioners with lifes spiritual, physical, mental and emotional well being.

Our committee initiated in 2007 and has sponsored 3 annual fall “Step Into Health” fairs. We have had a variety of presenters: a police officer and squad car with a K9 Unit, bicycle safety, heart disease, diabetes, lung health, eye disorders, proper hand washing technique with black light error, smoking cessation, senior exercise and community program information, fall prevention, home health care, dental hygiene with free toothbrush and floss, grief support and prayer shawl ministry, blood pressure clinic, balance testing, water purification, global warming demonstration, advocare nutritionals, pro’s & cons of immunizations, dietician and healthy snacks, massage therapists, chiropractic information, braille cards and sight impaired tools, how to read your medication labels, as well as a magic show and face painting.

Paul and I offer information about chemical awareness, how to read labels of all mainstream products you purchase, with handouts listing potentially harmful ingredients, alternative baby and family personal care products, safe cleaning supplies, nutritional vitamin supplements, aromatherapy oils, and weight loss and fitness products.

We’ve also had “Walks” for physical exercise and spiritual wellness; which was a great activity for all ages to participate in.

Our parish nurses and other volunteer nurses provide FREE monthly blood pressure checks at all church services. We’ve held biannual Blood Drives with the help of the junior high students. They learn community service and receive a stipend for a special field trip.

We have purchased supplies and equipment for our parish nurse program.

Our parish nurses have topical weekly suggestions in our church bulletin which represent our mission statement: To empower our parish family to incorporate wellness of mind, body and spirit into our daily lives through health education and spiritual support.

Recently the Wellness Corner stated:

For those not too interested in big diet changes for bone and joint health, try these dietary supplements. Health care providers recommend supplements such as:

a good multi-vitamin

Vitamin K

Vitamin C

Vitamin E

fish oil

coenzyme Q10

selenium

phosphorus

calcium

magnesium

vitamin D

boron

silicon,

manganese

zinc

…and much more!

MSM

Stop smoking; smokers have lower bone mass. Wear proper shoes and use proper equipment when playing sports. and enjoy healthier bones and joints, say your parish nurses!“

************************

So why am I telling you all about our activity
in our parish Health and Wellness Committee?

* Perhaps you could initiate and support a health and wellness committee to improve the quality of living in your community.

  * Because we want you to realize that we are truly concerned about the health and well being of all people.

* We understand the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual stress of losing a child, a parent, a close friend. Supporting people in grief of a loved one and how faith plays a role in the healing process.

* We want to learn from other health care providers about their suggestions for healthy living.

* We want to offer and be available to educate and answer questions regarding: preventive, alternative ideas in taking medications, a listing of potentially harmful ingredients and chemical awareness, preservatives in food and in your everyday mainstream personal care, baby, cleaning and even pet products.

* Start reading labels on all products you purchase.

* Teach people to become an advocate in your own health, by asking lots of questions, researching diagnosis to understand and be knowledgeable about precautions, side effects to medications, procedures, your rights, your choices, alternatives to drugs, nutritional diet changes versus drugs, surgery.

* Letting you know this is where our heart and passion is: to help people enjoy Safe Healthy Living.

* We all desire and need to be loved by our family and friends. We hope to offer suggestions that will be helpful to you and your family as you go through your daily lives.

Be the best you can be: Believe in Yourself

I just read a great article about the necessity to have a nutritional acid/alkaline balance in your system to maximize a healthy body, free of disease.

By reading this article you can learn to self regulate your body by the food you eat, how to supplement vitamins and minerals if you do not get all the nutrients necessary to keep yourself alkaline and less acidic. In order to maintain the balance for a healthy, physically fit body and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Below are a few quotes that I found interesting:

“Back in high school chemistry, we learned about pH: acids had low numbers, alkalines had high numbers, and a pH of 7.0 was neutral. And it all meant absolutely nothing in terms of day-to-day life.

It now turns out that we have a better shot at long-term health if our body’s pH is neutral or slightly alkaline. When we tilt toward greater acidity, which can be measured easily, we have a greater risk of developing osteoporosis, weak muscles, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and a host of other health problems.”

____________________

“Long term, excess acidity leads to thinner bones and lower muscle mass, points out Anthony Sebastian, M.D., of the University of California, San Francisco. These problems are compounded by normal aging, which increases acidosis, bone loss, and muscle wasting. Along the way, calcium and magnesium losses can equate to deficiencies, with many ramifications. Both minerals play essential roles in bone formation and normal heart rhythm. Low magnesium levels can cause muscle cramps, arrhythmias, and anxiety.”

____________________

“So if acid foods don’t necessarily make for an acid pH, what then happens? Sebastian points to four big issues.

• First, fruits and vegetables are rich in potassium salts, a natural buffer. Eating few of these foods deprives us of potassium, a mineral that protects against hypertension and stroke. According to Cordain’s research, humans evolved eating a 10:1 ratio of potassium to sodium, and he regards this ratio as our biological baseline. Today, because of heavily salted processed and fast foods, combined with a low intake of fruits and vegetables, the ratio is now 3:1 in favor of sodium. That reversal, he says, wreaks havoc with pH and our dependency on potassium.

• Second, there has also been a similar reversal in the consumption of naturally occurring bicarbonate (such as potassium bicarbonate) in foods and added chloride (mostly in the form of sodium chloride, or table salt). Bicarbonate is alkaline, where as chloride is acid-yielding. Chloride also constricts blood vessels, and narrows blood vessels reduce circulation, Sebastian says. Because the whole body depends on healthy circulation, vasoconstriction contributes to heart disease, stroke, dementia, and probably every other degenerative disease.

• Third, eating large amounts of animal protein (including meat, fowl, and seafood) releases sulfuric acid though the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids, also contributing to greater acidity. This acidic shift can be offset with greater consumption of fruits and vegetables (rich in potassium bicarbonate), but again, most Americans eat these foods sparingly.

By reading this article you will learn about the toxins found in most deodorants. I learned these facts 5 years ago, which sparked a dramatic change in the products my family uses for cleaning and personal care. You can understand more about the our lifestyle change to safe, healthier products here. My goal is to help you read labels and know what ingredients to avoid so that you and your family can reduce the toxic overload created by many common products.

My husband, Paul, upon first using Subdue Deodorant (pictured above) experienced a terrible red, itchy, patchy, smelly rash. But the rash wasn’t coming from the new deodorant! It was his body shedding the toxins as they came out of his pores from all the years of using over the counter deodorants. He applied Eliminator mouthwash and tea tree oil in distilled water (to be covered in a future blog post) to his skin for about a week or two until the rash and toxins subsided.

Did you know that toxicity is one of the two causes of all disease? Yet almost every American is now in toxic overload!

This toxic overload accumulates from many different and often seemingly innocent sources — things that, until Paul experienced a reaction, we didn’t think about twice, like deodorant.

Well, we think about them a lot now! And I think about them every day because I’ve made it my mission to provide safe, non-toxic yet effective alternatives to people like you.

Disease doesn’t just happen. Health is the product of many small choices that we make every day. Some choices serve cellular health, while others lead to cellular malfunction and down a pathway to disease and even death.

Most deodorants are the source of an amazing array of toxins, many of them quite deadly over time as our bodies absorb them through the skin. But it’s possible to choose a deodorant that’s both safe and effective instead!

Here’s an excerpt from an article that I read recently, which share a bit more information:

_______________

Toxins in Your Deodorant

Aluminum, triclosan, propylene glycol and more…

We are exposed to aluminum in cookware, foil, antacids and other OTC drugs, processed food, vaccinations and, as I mentioned last week, in public tap water. We are getting far more than our bodies can handle, and it is contributing to our current epidemic of degenerative brain disorders — Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), Parkinson’s Disease, etc. Autopsies performed on Alzheimer’s patients found four times the amount of aluminum considered normal in their brain cells, and, as I mentioned last week, when aluminum is combined with fluoride it causes brain cell death.

Deodorants contribute to our aluminum burden. Aluminum compounds are used to check bacterial growth and prevent perspiration. (Preventing perspiration is not a good idea, and it has nothing to do with eliminating odor, which comes from the bacteria.)

Using aluminum deodorants is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Most of these contain triclosan, a hormone-disrupting toxin linked with liver damage, eye and skin irritations, impaired thyroid function and the deaths of fish and other wildlife when it pollutes our waterways. Triclosan accumulates in the liver, lungs and kidneys to toxic levels and has been found in 3 of every 5 samples of breast milk from nursing mothers, posing a threat to fetal and childhood development.

Deodorants also contain a variety of other toxic chemicals including propylene glycol, a neurotoxin which may cause kidney and liver damage. It is a suspected carcinogen and can cause contact dermatitis, enlarged sweat glands, cysts and lung and throat irritations. Parabens are preservatives derived from the highly toxic toluene. They act like estrogens and have been linked with breast cancer. BHT and formaldehyde, other preservatives, are suspected carcinogens. Phthalates are endocrine disrupters that lower testosterone and thyroid activity. (Hypothyroidism is another epidemic today, especially among women.)

_______________

These are only some of the toxins commonly found in deodorants and I hope this information causes you to read labels more closely and avoid purchasing deodorants with these toxic ingredients.

And now that you know the facts and are aware of the toxins in deodorant, you can make a conscious choice to look for a safe, aluminum-free, tricolsan free, propylene glycol free deodorant.

I’d encourage you to view this fact sheet about Neways Subdue Deodorant– it’s FREE of all the toxins mentioned above.

Paul and I continue to use Neways Subdue Deodorant and are very thankful to have found a safe non-toxic, non carcinogenic, no aluminum, fragrance-free deodorant that is just as effective as any of the products you find on the shelves.

You may also CLICK HERE for more information about other personal care, cleaning, laundry, weight loss, fitness, nutritionals, anti-aging, aromatherapy, pet care products and more from Neways.
